Summer School is a week long programme of activities being run by Highdown staff. It will enable you to make friends with other students in your mentor group. You will have some core lessons (Maths, English, Science, Humanities) and have some fun activities such as orienteering, swimming, and problem solving activities.
If you missed the webinar on Tuesday 13 July or just want to re-fresh what was said then please do play the recording below.
We look forward to seeing you at the Summer School w/c 26 July 2021.
What should I do if my child is ill and can’t attend?
Please phone the absence line (0118 9015823) and leave a clear message with your child’s full name and the reason for absence
Will I be able to bring a bicycle or scooter?
Yes, you may bring a bicycle or scooter provided you have a helmet and lock. We will open up the bike shed for storage during the day. Please do not bring e-scooters.
What will the students be doing?
Each day, there will be 3 morning lessons (Maths, English plus one from Science, Humanities and Citizenship, Water Sports and First Aid). In addition, they will have time with their mentor first thing in the morning and last thing in the day to cover a range of personal development activities. In the afternoons we will be focussing on team building through a wide range of house activities on the site. On the last afternoon, the students will create a Big Get Together and finish with a graduation ceremony.
Can students bring mobile phones?
Students should not bring mobile phones to Summer School. If parents wish their son/daughter to have a phone for the walk to or from school then a labelled clear plastic bag should be provided. The phones will be collected and placed in the safe until the end of the day.
What are the arrangements for pick up and drop off?
On the first day we will offer an American style rolling drop off from 8:50am. Parents should not get out of the car and staff will be there to collect the students and direct them to the registration points. Thereafter, parents should not come onto the site but get into the habit of dropping off at the gate. The school day will finish at 3pm and students will be dismissed in their mentor groups. Staff will be at the gates and patrolling the local area during the dismissal.
Who should my child speak to if they are upset/worried?
Each student will have a mentor who they can speak to. They can speak to any of us though and Ms Murphy (our school First Aider) is available all week if students are feeling ill.
Do we need to do a COVID Lateral Flow Test?
Do we need packed lunch?
No, morning snack and packed lunch are provided. If your child has a particular snack they like and you want to pack it with them, that’s ok. Please do not send your child with fizzy drinks, sweets, chocolates or nuts. All students should bring a named water bottle.
Do we need equipment?
No, all equipment and stationery are provided.
What should my child wear for summer school?
Comfortable clothes and footwear suitable for running and playing outside and appropriate to
warm weather (if we get some!). On one of the days they will be required to bring a swimming kit.
What should I do if I have any further questions?
